After four years as Prime Minister, the first official portrait of John Major is about to be unveiled. In the hard and competitive world of prestigious commissions, he holds his own - with the realistic desclaimer that "They all help to pay the mortgage". That's Peter Deighan for you.... I first met Peter Deighan some years ago, on Ireland's Late Late Show, on which we were both guests. On the show were a number of his portraits, which were strewn around the TV studio, I was at once struck by the remarkable quality of two pictures in particular - portraits of the Irish Prime Minister, Mr Charles Haughey and Cardinal Basil Hume. |

On visiting the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' summer exhibition, I found myself looking at myself looking at me, and began to know what life must have been like for Dorian Gray. Peter Deighan's virtuosity astonishes me. That is why in the portrait I look so mesmerised. As a matter of fact, I see now my resemblance to that great aunt. |

My portrait by Peter Deighan was a fascinating experience, watching one's image take form on a white canvas, I am thrilled to have had it done. I only wish however, that my name was Dorian Gray and the painting got older instead of myself. Alas, with a portrait one can only look back and see the way we were. |

When Steve won his first World Championship in 1981 it was quite appropriate, therefore, for us to choose Peter to paint a portrait of Steve commemorating his first majestic title. I was delighted with the result and of course have been even more delight that the careers of Steve Davis and Peter Deighan have continued to flourish. |

Undoubtedly Co. Monaghan's two most accomplished sons - though in widely divergent professions - are pictured together in Clones. |

When I decided to build the Kildare Hotel and Country Club, in conjunction with Arnold Palmer, I though it would be fitting to have a painting done to commemorate the event. I chose Peter Deighan because of previous commissions which had been extremely successful. He captured so well what I was trying to achieve, that I commissioned a second portrait of myself and Arnold Palmer. One hangs in Arnold's home in Florida and the other is in the main entrance of The K Club; it was a most successful commission. Dr Michael W.J. Smurfit |

Peter Deighan's exceptional talent has already won him a highly competitive Moyglare International Painting Competition. An award which reflected his sensitive feeling for his subject. Even more significant, maybe, his marvellously evocative interpretation of one of the great Piggott partners, Nijinsky, earned him an accolade and commissions from the exacting master of Ballydoyle Vincent O' Brien. I wish you every success with your future, Peter. I know your paintings will all be first class, the one of Rodrigo De Triano is exceptional. Lester Piggott |

Peter has tremendous artistic talent, capturing his subject whether it be human or animal with superb accuracy and sympathy. Willie Carson |

I have recently had the honour of sitting for Peter Deighan, and while doing so saw much of his work in the the world of equestrianism and was delighted to see how he captured all that is good in his horse subjects - his overall portrait of Vincent O' Brien surrounded by many of his great horses of past and present being an extraordinary and delightful work. Peter seems to have the knack of finding the characteristics of his subject, human and equine, and translate them to the canvas in the manner of a modern master. Michael O' Hehir |
